June 19 (Day 22): Highlights & Instagram

IMG_0951cThis was our last full day in Japan. We wanted to really end on a high note, so we checked into the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo for one night. Here are some highlights, followed by the photos I posted to Instagram that day:

In the morning we packed up and left the Totoro Room and headed over to the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. We were several hours early, so I expected we would just leave our bags with them and go out walk around for a while. Instead, they told us they could have our room ready in 30 minutes and they invited us to go to the bar and have a drink while we wait.

This place is no joke. The reception area is on the 38th floor. The views are amazing. The bar had several fountains and a river. We were given a corner room on the 34th floor. Again, the views were fantastic. The bed was luxurious. The bathtub had both an amazing view AND a TV! The blinds and curtains were all set up to open and close via switches next to the bed.

After settling in a bit, we went to get some lunch in the vast basement food floor of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi department store, which was right next door to the hotel. So many delicious options! We bought some bento boxes and other items and brought them back to our room to eat.

Then I went to the spa for a massage and Jason went to the hotel gym. Both had amazing views. I was so relaxed afterwards, and Jason enjoyed experiencing a gym in a 5 star hotel. But then he needed a nap, while I sat on the chaise chair and tried to get caught up on the blog.

For dinner, we went to the Tapas Molecular Bar in the hotel. It only seats 8 and is a pretty great show, as well as an amazing meal. Chef Ping told us all about the dishes while he was prepping them, cooking them in front of us, and serving them. There was whimsy and skill in every dish, and even in the implements we used to eat them. You have to check out this video of Jason eating one of the desserts. Eventually I’ll post photos of all the dishes.

Walking tally: Fitbit says I only walked 6.5k steps today (I blame the incredible hotel room, because once we were there I barely wanted to leave!), which is almost 3 miles. That’s a total of 194 miles of walking for the trip so far.

And here are the photos I posted to Instagram on this day:

And there are a lot more photos from this day in this set on flickr (with photos from June 18th & 20th also).
