Today our trip is officially half way done, and we spent the day traveling to Ōkunoshima, the Rabbit Island. Here are some highlights, followed by the photos I posted to Instagram that day:
Well, this is kind of obvious – the highlight of our day was going to Rabbit Island. We had breakfast at the hotel, walked to the train station next door, and followed the travel instructions that Alex Gross had shared with me.
Basically, you take a couple trains and a ferry to get to this island that’s overrun with wild rabbits. From the station where you transfer from the first train to the second train there are lots of indicators that they know a huge number of people passing through are on their way to see the bunnies, and they’ve made it pretty clear what you need to do.
You can buy rabbit food at the ferry station while you’re waiting for your boat. This is highly recommended because, while the bunnies on the island are super cute, they really only care about you if you’re feeding them.
It was pretty hot on the island, but it was a nice place to walk around, and it was endlessly entertaining to have bunnies come bounding out of the woods to greet you and ask you for food. One rabbit bit – not while I was feeding it, as the signs warned might happen, but while I was reaching into the bag to get some food out. Another time we were sitting on a table feeding rabbits – they tended to swarm around you if you sat in one place handing out food – and they stepped on Jason’s glasses (which were on the table) and kicked them to the ground. The arms were bent and one of the lenses fell out, and Jason was kind of sad about this. But he was ale to sort of fix them.
When we left Rabbit Island we took a train to Osaka, got our luggage out of the coin lockers, and went to check into our next AirBnB, the Cat Room. We did some regular person things like got some groceries at a store just downstairs and did some laundry, and then got some late-night dinner at a place nearby.
Walking tally: Fitbit says I walked 15k steps today, which is about 6.5 miles. That’s a total of over 125 miles of walking for the trip so far.
And here are the photos I posted to Instagram on this day:
And there are a lot more photos from this day in this set on flickr (with photos from June 11th also).
